Ingredients

  • 6 cups brioche or French bread, cubed
  • 2 cups apple pie filling (or 2 apples, peeled and cooked in butter with cinnamon and brown sugar)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Optional toppings: caramel sauce, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. Place cubed bread into the baking dish.
  3. Evenly spoon apple pie filling over the bread and lightly toss to distribute.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until well combined.
  5. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples, pressing gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  6. Let sit for 10–15 minutes at room temperature or refrigerate up to 1 hour.
  7. Bake for 40–50 minutes until the top is golden and the center is set.
  8. Serve warm with caramel sauce, whipped cream, or ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best absorption and texture.
  • Letting the custard soak in before baking improves richness.
  • Customize with nuts, raisins, or a drizzle of maple syrup in the custard.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge and reheat gently before serving.
  • Great served with warm custard, ice cream, or even a dusting of powdered sugar.
