Ingredients

For the dough:

1 cup warm water

2¼ teaspoons instant yeast or active dry yeast

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

to 3 cups all-purpose flour

For the garlic butter topping:

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 teaspoon garlic powder or 2 cloves fresh minced garlic

Pinch of salt

Optional: 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Optional: 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add olive oil, salt, and flour. Mix and knead for 5–6 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. Let the dough rise until doubled in size (about 30 minutes or use Instant Pot yogurt setting).
  4. Punch down the dough and divide into golf ball-sized pieces. Roll each into a 9–12 inch rope and tie into knots.
  5. Place knots on a lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise until doubled again (about 30 minutes).
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden, or air fry at 325°F for 11–12 minutes in batches.
  7. While baking, mix melted butter with garlic, seasoning, and salt.
  8. Brush garlic butter over hot knots. Sprinkle with Parmesan and parsley if using. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic for a stronger flavor.
  • Substitute herbs for different seasoning profiles.
  • Add red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Shape dough into twists or rolls instead of knots.
  • Freeze unbuttered knots and reheat with fresh garlic butter.
