Ingredients

For the naan bread:

1/4 cup warm water

2 tsp granulated sugar

1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast or instant rapid rise yeast

3/4 cup warm milk

3/4 cup Greek yogurt or plain natural yogurt

1/4 cup vegetable oil plus 2 tbsp extra for cooking

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 cups plain flour plus extra for dusting

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

For the garlic butter topping:

3 tbsp butter, melted

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add milk, yogurt, oil, garlic, flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for 3–5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Grease a bowl, place dough inside, cover, and let rise 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Divide into 10 portions, roll into balls, and flatten into 6-inch ovals.
  6. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, lightly grease with oil.
  7. Cook naan 1–2 minutes until bubbles form, brush top with oil, flip, and cook 1–2 more minutes until golden.
  8. Keep warm in a towel while cooking remaining naan.
  9. Mix melted butter, garlic, and herbs, then brush over warm naan before serving.

Notes

  • Wrap cooked naan in a towel to keep them soft.
  • Brush with garlic butter after cooking to prevent burning.
  • For extra flavor, try ghee instead of vegetable oil.
