Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 medium bell pepper, chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 small head green cabbage, cored and chopped (about 67 cups)
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart, until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for 5–7 minutes until it begins to wilt and reduce in volume.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes with their juices, Creole seasoning, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Stir well and simmer for about 5 minutes to blend flavors.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Cover and cook for 3–5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease if using higher-fat ground beef.
  • For a traditional texture, stir in 1 cup cooked rice before adding cheese.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • This dish freezes well for up to 2 months.
