Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • ½ small white onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil, plus more for cooking
  • ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp salt
  • For the yogurt sauce:
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp sour cream
  • ¼ cucumber, finely grated (optional)
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp parsley or dill, finely chopped (optional)
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Mash chickpeas in a bowl until mostly smooth but slightly chunky.
  2. Add onion, garam masala, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Stir in egg and breadcrumbs until mixture holds together. Add more breadcrumbs if too wet.
  4. Shape into 8 small patties and press firmly.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  6. For the sauce, mix yogurt, sour cream, cucumber (if using), garlic, lemon juice, herbs, and salt until smooth.
  7. Serve patties warm with yogurt sauce, in wraps, or with salad.

Notes

  • If mixture is too wet, add breadcrumbs 1 Tbsp at a time until firm.
  • For a vegan option, replace egg with a flax egg and use dairy-free yogurt/sour cream.
  • Can be baked at 375°F for 30–35 minutes, flipping halfway, for a lighter version.
  • Add grated carrot, zucchini, or spinach for extra veggies.
  • Air fryer method: cook at 375°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping once.
