Ingredients

  • 21 ounces apple pie filling, thick and chunky
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 7.5 ounces canned biscuit dough (usually 6 biscuits)
  • 10 soft caramels, each cut in half
  • About 2½ quarts vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat about 2½ quarts of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat until hot enough for frying.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon to make the coating. Set aside.
  3. Separate the biscuit dough and flatten each biscuit into a 3-inch disc using your palm.
  4. Place 1 tablespoon of apple pie filling in the center of each disc, followed by two caramel halves.
  5. Pull the dough edges up and over the filling and pinch tightly to seal. Roll into a smooth ball.
  6. Carefully lower one or two dough balls into the hot oil. Fry, rotating gently, until deep golden brown on all sides.
  7. Remove from the oil and immediately roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture while still hot.
  8. Place on a cooling rack briefly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or cloves to the cinnamon sugar for extra spice.
  • Use homemade thick apple filling if desired.
  • Crescent roll dough can be used instead of biscuit dough, but must be sealed tightly.
