Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 6 oz (170 g) mozzarella cheese, cut into sticks
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel onions and slice into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate and select the largest rings.
  2. Insert mozzarella sticks into each onion ring, pressing gently to secure.
  3. Prepare three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  4. Coat each stuffed ring in flour, then dip in egg, and coat in breadcrumbs, pressing gently.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C). Oil should reach halfway up the rings.
  6. Fry in small batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.

Notes

  • Add garlic powder or Italian herbs to breadcrumbs for extra flavor.
  • Use provolone or mild cheddar as a mozzarella substitute.
  • To bake, cook at 400°F (200°C) for 18–22 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Air-fry at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes.
  • Best served fresh but can be reheated in oven or air fryer.
