Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or 1/4 teaspoon table salt)
  • 1 cup salted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark)
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment or foil, leaving overhang, and lightly grease the bottom.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips, reserving a small handful for topping.
  5. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips and toffee bits (if using) on top.
  6. Bake for 20–30 minutes, checking at 20 minutes. Remove when edges are golden and center is set but still soft.
  7. Cool completely in the pan. Lift out using parchment or foil overhang and cut into squares.

Notes

  • For clean cuts, cool completely or chill before slicing.
  • Do not overbake—bars firm up as they cool.
  • Mix chocolate types for extra depth.
  • Skip the toffee or replace with nuts or caramel chips for variation.
