Ingredients

  • 1 (14–16 ounce) block firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (slightly less if using a salty sauce)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (or potato starch or arrowroot starch)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 10 minutes to remove excess moisture using a tofu press or by wrapping in a towel and placing a heavy object on top.
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes or tear into bite-sized pieces.
  3. Place tofu in a bowl and drizzle with oil. Add onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Gently toss to coat evenly.
  4. Sprinkle cornstarch over the tofu and toss again until lightly coated on all sides.
  5. Lightly grease the air fryer basket if needed. Arrange tofu in a mostly single layer with space between pieces.
  6. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 18–20 minutes, shaking at the 8-minute mark and again about 5 minutes later.
  7. Cook until golden brown and crispy. Add 1–2 extra minutes if needed for additional crispiness.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce or toss in sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Add 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
  • For spice, add 1/4–1/2 teaspoon cayenne or chili powder.
  • Substitute potato starch or arrowroot starch for cornstarch if needed.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes to restore crispiness.
  • Do not overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if doubling the recipe.
