Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 1 ½ teaspoons instant dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons butter (softened or melted, for filling)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander or parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter (for brushing before baking)
  • Optional: Extra garlic and herbs for garnish after baking

Instructions

  1. Mix warm milk with sugar and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and knead into a dough. Add 2 tbsp softened butter and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Prepare garlic butter filling by mixing softened butter, minced garlic, and chopped herbs.
  5. Punch down risen dough and divide into four equal parts. Roll each into an 8–9 inch circle.
  6. Place the first dough circle on a lined tray, spread garlic butter, repeat with second and third layers, placing the fourth layer on top without filling.
  7. Place a glass in the center and cut 16 equal strips from center outward.
  8. Twist two adjacent strips away from each other twice and pinch ends to form star points. Repeat all around.
  9. Let shaped bread rest for 15–20 minutes. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  10. Brush bread with olive oil or melted butter. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  11. Optionally brush with more garlic butter and sprinkle herbs after baking.

Notes

  • Add mozzarella or cheddar between layers for cheesy garlic bread.
  • Use dried herbs or Italian seasoning if fresh aren’t available.
  • Try a sweet version with cinnamon sugar filling.
  • Brush with butter immediately after baking to keep it soft.
  • Shape and refrigerate overnight for baking the next day.
