Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease or line an 8-inch round cake pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, vegetable oil (or melted butter), egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool for 5 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack. Add desired toppings and serve.

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing to keep the cake light and fluffy.
  • Melted butter can be used instead of oil for a richer flavor.
  • Milk alternatives like almond, soy, or oat milk work well.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months and thaw at room temperature before serving.
