Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or your favorite homemade chocolate cupcake recipe)
  • Ingredients required for cake mix (usually eggs, oil, and water)
  • 1 tub chocolate frosting (or ~1½ cups homemade chocolate frosting)
  • 1 cup melting chocolate or chocolate candy melts (dark or milk chocolate)
  • White decorator icing (stiff consistency)
  • 1 wide round piping tip (e.g., Wilton #12)
  • 2 piping bags or plastic sandwich bags
  • Mini chocolate chips (for ghost and tree faces)
  • Toothpicks
  • Wax or parchment paper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare the cupcakes according to the package or recipe instructions. Bake and cool completely.
  2. While cupcakes are cooling, melt the chocolate in 30-second microwave intervals, stirring between, until smooth.
  3. Place a haunted tree outline under parchment or wax paper on a tray. Pipe melted chocolate over the outline to form trees about 4–5 inches tall.
  4. Insert a toothpick into the base of each chocolate tree while still soft. Add mini chocolate chips for eyes if desired. Let harden completely at room temp or in the fridge.
  5. Frost each cupcake with chocolate frosting using a spatula or piping bag.
  6. Fill a piping bag fitted with a round tip with white decorator icing. Pipe a ghost by squeezing a tall mound in the center of each cupcake, lifting up to create a ghost shape.
  7. Press mini chocolate chips into the ghosts for eyes and mouths.
  8. Gently peel hardened chocolate trees from the paper and insert the toothpick end into the cupcake behind each ghost.
  9. Arrange cupcakes on a tray to create a spooky haunted forest scene.

Notes

  • Use stiff decorator icing to ensure the ghosts hold their shape.
  • Make sure tree bases are thick to prevent breakage.
  • Assemble trees and ghosts shortly before serving for best presentation.
  • Store chocolate trees separately if preparing in advance.
  • Get creative with alternate decorations like pumpkins, spiders, or bats.
