Ingredients

  • 3.5 oz (100 g) Korean rice cakes (garaetteok, cylindrical type; fresh or frozen)
  • ½ tbsp butter or vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp honey (or more, to taste)
  • Toasted sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice Cakes: If using frozen rice cakes, soak them in warm water for 20–30 minutes until softened. Separate the pieces to prevent sticking.
  2. Heat the Pan: In a non-stick skillet, melt the butter (or heat oil) over low to medium heat.
  3. Cook the Rice Cakes: Add the rice cakes and pan-sear for 4–5 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  4. Serve: Transfer the rice cakes to a plate, drizzle generously with honey, and sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For a spicy-sweet version, mix gochujang and honey and drizzle over the rice cakes.
  • Add crushed peanuts or walnuts for extra crunch.
  • Use dairy-free butter or oil for a vegan-friendly option.
  • Best served fresh for the perfect crispy-chewy balance.
