Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 34 mm thick)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup cooking cream
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup chopped turkey beef or chicken sausage, cooked
  • 3 green onions, finely sliced
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a large baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk 1 minute.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk and cream. Cook 4–5 minutes until thickened.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Remove from heat.
  5. Layer half the potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the cream sauce over, sprinkle with half the cheeses.
  6. Add remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheeses.
  7. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes.
  8. Uncover, add sausage on top, and bake 20–25 more minutes until golden and tender.
  9. Rest 10 minutes, garnish with green onions and serve with sour cream if desired.

Notes

  • Make it vegetarian by omitting sausage and adding mushrooms or caramelized onions.
