Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup pecans, toasted and chopped
  • 1/2 cup pecans, toasted (for topping)
  • Pinch smoked flaky salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Place the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and cook while stirring until melted and foamy. Continue cooking until the butter turns golden brown with a nutty aroma, then remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, beat the egg for about 1 minute until slightly frothy.
  5. Add the brown sugar and beat until the mixture becomes thick and fluffy.
  6. Stir in the cooled brown butter, vanilla extract, maple extract, and maple syrup until smooth.
  7. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  8. Fold in the chopped toasted pecans.
  9. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking pan and sprinkle the remaining toasted pecans over the top.
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out mostly clean.
  11. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle with a pinch of smoked flaky salt.
  12. Allow the blondies to cool completely before slicing into bars.

Notes

  • Browning the butter enhances the nutty flavor and adds depth to the blondies.
  • Do not overbake; slightly soft centers create a chewy texture.
  • Toasting pecans intensifies their flavor and crunch.
  • Chocolate chips can be added for extra sweetness.
  • Allow the blondies to cool fully before cutting for clean slices.
