Ingredients

  • 1 slice white bread, finely diced
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ small onion, finely diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (for gravy)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (optional)
  • Creamy mashed potatoes, for serving
  • Fresh parsley, optional for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine diced bread and milk. Let sit for a few minutes until the bread absorbs the liquid.
  3. Melt butter in a pan over medium heat and sauté onion and garlic for 3–4 minutes until translucent. Add to the bread mixture and let cool slightly.
  4. Add ground beef, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix until just combined.
  5. Shape into small 2-teaspoon-sized meatballs and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
  7. For the gravy, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  8. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly until smooth.
  9. Simmer until thickened, 3–5 minutes. Stir in cream (if using).
  10. Add meatballs to the gravy and simmer for 5 minutes to coat evenly.
  11. Serve over mashed potatoes and garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat mixture to keep the meatballs tender.
  • You can pan-fry the meatballs instead of baking them.
  • Use plain white bread for the best texture.
  • Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce for deeper flavor.
  • Gravy thickens as it cools—reheat gently and add a splash of broth if needed.
