Ingredients

  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup (65 g) granulated sugar
  • ⅔ cup (140 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups (135 g) rolled oats (old-fashioned)
  • 1 cup (150 g) semisweet or dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Beat until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  6. Fold in the rolled oats and chocolate chips.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges are golden and centers look slightly soft.
  9. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use old-fashioned rolled oats for the best chewy texture.
  • Don’t over-bake for softer, chewier cookies.
  • Chill dough for 20–30 minutes if cookies spread too much.
  • Add ½ cup chopped nuts or dried fruit for variation, keeping total mix-ins around 1 cup.
