Ingredients

  • 225 g Medjool dates (about 30 large dates)
  • 80 g tahini, well stirred (1/3 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or agave syrup (optional)
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 112 g dark chocolate, chopped (3/4 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt or flaked sea salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl combine the tahini, maple syrup or agave syrup (if using), cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  2. If the mixture is too thick, add a small amount of water, one teaspoon at a time, until it reaches a thick but spoonable consistency.
  3. Slice each Medjool date lengthwise and remove the pit while keeping the date intact to form a pocket.
  4. Spoon the spiced tahini caramel mixture into each date and gently press the sides slightly closed while keeping the filling visible.
  5. Place the chopped dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval until smooth.
  6. Dip each filled date into the melted chocolate or spoon chocolate over the top until partially or fully coated.
  7. Place the coated dates on a parchment-lined tray.
  8. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes until the chocolate sets.
  10. Serve chilled or slightly softened at room temperature.

Notes

  • Medjool dates work best because they are soft and large enough to hold filling.
  • If tahini is unavailable, almond butter, peanut butter, or cashew butter can be used.
  • Add chopped nuts or shredded coconut on top for extra texture.
  • A pinch of espresso powder in the melted chocolate deepens the flavor.
  • Allow the treats to sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving for the best texture.
