Ingredients

  • 3 sticks cinnamon (3-inch)
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 4 cardamom pods, lightly cracked
  • 1/4 teaspoon whole coriander seeds
  • 1/2 star anise pod
  • 1 quart (900 ml) high-quality apple cider
  • Optional: 1–2 teaspoons raw sugar, to taste
  • Optional: lemon zest or orange peel
  • For serving: lemon slices, freshly grated nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Pour apple cider into a slow cooker and set to high.
  2. In a small skillet, toast cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, coriander, and star anise over medium-high heat until fragrant and slightly darkened.
  3. Add toasted spices directly into the cider (or place in a spice bag for easy removal).
  4. Let the cider mull for about 4 hours, reducing heat if it begins to bubble.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness with sugar if desired.
  6. Serve warm, garnished with lemon slices or freshly grated nutmeg.

Notes

  • Simmer on the stovetop for 30–60 minutes if you want a quicker version.
  • Add lemon zest, orange peel, or fresh ginger for extra flavor.
  • Remove spices before storing leftovers to avoid bitterness.
  • Use cloudy, unfiltered apple cider for the richest flavor.
  • This recipe is alcohol-free and family-friendly.
