Ingredients

2 tablespoons oil

12 oz (340g) beef, thinly sliced against the grain and tossed with 1 tsp oil and 2 tsp cornstarch

5 cloves garlic, chopped

½ red bell pepper, thinly sliced

1 small onion, thinly sliced

2 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp dark soy sauce

1 tsp oyster sauce

1 Tbsp fish sauce

½ tsp sugar

1 cup packed Thai basil leaves

Cilantro (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat wok over high heat and add oil. Sear the beef until just browned, then remove and set aside.
  2. Stir-fry garlic and red pepper for ~20 seconds, then add onion and cook until caramelized.
  3. Return beef to the wok. Add soy sauces, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. Stir-fry briefly.
  4. Fold in Thai basil until just wilted. Serve immediately over jasmine rice with cilantro garnish.

Notes

  • Ground beef, chicken, pork, or tofu work well as substitutes.
  • If available, holy basil adds an authentic spicy-peppery kick; otherwise, Thai or Italian basil works fine.
  • Add Thai chilies or a garlic-chili paste for extra heat.
  • Top with a fried egg—a classic Thai touch that adds richness.
  • Add veggies like green beans or extra bell peppers to bulk up the dish.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container (up to 4 days); reheat with a splash of water or fish sauce to revive flavors.
