Ingredients

For the Burgers:

pounds ground beef (80% lean)

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 egg yolk

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

4 slices cheddar cheese

4 hamburger buns

Optional Toppings:

Lettuce leaves

Sliced tomatoes

Sliced red onions

Pickles

For the Special Sauce:

½ cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons pickle relish

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 teaspoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon sugar

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, pickle relish, yellow mustard, ketchup, white vinegar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and sugar. Stir until well combined. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, ketchup, egg yolk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Do not overmix.
  3. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties, each about ¾ inch thick.
  4. Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Add a slice of cheddar cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  5. While cooking, toast the buns on the grill or in the skillet until golden brown.
  6. Spread special sauce on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Place the cooked patty on top, then add your desired toppings such as lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For more flavor, try adding sautéed mushrooms or avocado to your burger.
  • Swap cheddar for Swiss, pepper jack, or your favorite cheese for a unique twist.
  • Vegetarians can use plant-based patties in place of the beef for a delicious alternative.
  • Grill the patties for a smoky flavor or use a stovetop skillet if you don’t have a grill.
