Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1 tablespoon active dry yeast

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups warm milk (around 110°F or 43°C)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then sprinkle the yeast over the mixture. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  3. Pour the activated yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir until a sticky dough forms. Do not knead—the dough should be shaggy and sticky.
  4. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Heat a griddle or non-stick pan over medium heat.
  6. Turn the risen dough out onto a floured surface and gently pat it down to about 1/2-inch thickness. Using a round cutter or glass, cut out the English muffins.
  7. Place the cut muffins onto the preheated griddle or pan. Cook each side for about 6-8 minutes, or until golden brown. Make sure both sides are thoroughly cooked.
  8. Allow the muffins to cool on a wire rack.
  9. Once cooled, use a fork to split the muffins in half. Toast them and serve with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For whole wheat muffins, swap half or all of the all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour.
  • For a savory version, add shredded cheese and finely chopped herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough.
  • To make the recipe vegan, substitute dairy milk with almond or oat milk, and use plant-based butter.
