Ingredients

  • 1 flank steak, 1 1/2 to 2 pounds
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 scallions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl or sealable plastic bag, whisk together soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, vegetable oil, and honey until fully blended.
  2. Add minced garlic, ginger, and sliced scallions. Mix well to combine.
  3. Place flank steak in the marinade, turning to coat all sides. Seal the bag or cover the bowl tightly.
  4. Refrigerate and marinate for at least 10 hours, preferably overnight.
  5. Remove steak from refrigerator 20 minutes before cooking. Preheat grill or grill pan over high heat.
  6. Remove steak from marinade and discard the liquid. Grill steak for 5–7 minutes per side, depending on thickness and preferred doneness.
  7. Transfer steak to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes.
  8. Slice thinly against the grain and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Add chili paste or red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Substitute half the balsamic vinegar with lime juice for a citrus flavor.
  • Add sesame oil for deeper umami flavor.
  • Can be used with skirt steak, sirloin, or beef kabobs.
  • Freeze steak in marinade for up to 2 months.
