Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, salt, and chocolate protein powder.
  3. Add the cold cubed butter and work it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips evenly.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt, eggs, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until a dough forms. Do not overmix.
  7. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  8. Cut the dough into 8 equal wedges.
  9. Place the wedges onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.
  10. Sprinkle coarse sugar on top if desired.
  11. Bake for 16 to 18 minutes or until the edges are set and the tops look slightly firm.
  12. Allow the scones to cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the dough to keep the scones soft and tender.
  • Use cold butter for flaky bakery-style texture.
  • Dark chocolate chips create a deeper chocolate flavor.
  • Espresso powder can be added to enhance the cocoa taste.
  • Dried cherries or raspberries pair beautifully with chocolate.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
  • Freeze baked or unbaked scones for convenient meal prep.
