  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup (170 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) hot coffee or hot water
  • For the frosting:
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup (65 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F) and prepare two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat butter, oil, and sugars until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, mixing gently.
  6. Stir in hot coffee until batter is smooth.
  7. Divide into pans and bake for 30–35 minutes.
  8. Cool cakes completely on a rack.
  9. Beat butter, sugar, cocoa, cream, vanilla, and salt until fluffy.
  10. Frost between layers and cover cake evenly.
