Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse blueberries if using fresh and remove any stems.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine blueberries, water, and sugar.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  4. Cook for 10–12 minutes until blueberries soften and burst.
  5. Lightly mash berries with a spoon to release more juice.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and vanilla if using.
  7. Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl or jar, pressing gently on solids.
  8. Let syrup cool completely before storing in a sealed container.

Notes

  • Frozen blueberries can be used without thawing.
  • For thicker syrup, simmer a few extra minutes.
  • Straining creates a smooth syrup, but you can skip it for a chunkier texture.
  • Store in a clean glass jar to maintain freshness.
  • Shake or stir before each use if separation occurs.
