Ingredients

  • 350 g wide egg noodles or csusza-style pasta
  • 1 small green cabbage (about 700 g), finely shredded
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt (divided)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add 1 teaspoon salt, and cook noodles until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onion and cook for 4–5 minutes until soft and lightly golden.
  4. Add shredded cabbage, remaining salt, pepper, and sugar if using. Stir well.
  5. Cook cabbage for 25–35 minutes, stirring often, until soft and caramelized.
  6. Add cooked noodles to the skillet and toss to combine.
  7. Cook together for 3–5 minutes so flavors meld.
  8. Add butter if desired, adjust seasoning, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Cook cabbage slowly for best caramelized flavor.
  • Sugar is optional but enhances browning.
  • Use butter for richer taste or skip for vegan version.
  • Reheat with a splash of water or oil to refresh texture.
  • Best served warm but reheats well.
