Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef, ground chicken, or a mix
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 slices white bread, soaked and squeezed dry
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup neutral oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground meat, onion, garlic, egg, soaked bread, paprika, salt, pepper, mustard, and parsley.
  2. Mix until well combined and the mixture holds together.
  3. Divide into 6 to 8 portions and shape into oval patties.
  4. Prepare three bowls with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs.
  5. Coat each patty in flour, dip in egg, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  6. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  7. Fry patties for 4 to 5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Transfer to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve warm with your choice of sides.

  • Use ground chicken for a lighter version.
  • Add chili flakes for mild heat.
  • Mix in dried marjoram for a traditional flavor.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
  • Bake at 200°C for about 25 minutes as an alternative to frying.
