Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 6 cups thinly sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • Powdered sugar for serving (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
  • Whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add lukewarm water and vegetable oil, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, mix sliced apples, sugar, raisins, cinnamon, and lemon juice until evenly coated.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Roll the dough out very thinly on a floured surface, then gently stretch it until paper-thin.
  6. Sprinkle bread crumbs evenly over the dough, leaving a small border.
  7. Spread apple filling evenly over the bread crumbs.
  8. Using a kitchen towel, carefully roll the dough into a log shape.
  9. Transfer the strudel seam-side down onto the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Brush the top with melted butter.
  11. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  12. Cool slightly before slicing and serve warm with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Bread crumbs help absorb moisture and keep the pastry crisp.
  • Add chopped walnuts or almonds for extra crunch.
  • Replace raisins with dried cranberries or apricots if preferred.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days.
  • Reheat in the oven for best crisp texture.
